Man United suffered their second successive home defeat in the tournament when they were beaten by Athletic Bilbao. Man United's miserable European home form continued as they were completely outplayed in this first-leg tie. Now the Red Devils managed just one win in five games at Old Trafford in the Champions League and Europa League this season.

Man United put very offensive line up for this game knowing they need good result before the away second leg. Evra-Evans-Smalling – Rafael were United rearguard to protect De Gea at the post. In the midfield were Young-Giggs-Jones-Park. While the strikers were Rooney and  Hernandez.

Man United started well by scoring first from Rooney but the signs that it was going to be a tough night were evident. Athletic were more focus, compact, discipline and determine. Fernando Llorente had couple of chances. And if not due to De Gea superb display, Man United should left the game more embarrassed.

Llorenta showed why he is so hot now by scoring the equalizer just before half time. They continued with their superb form by bossing the game while Man United finding it hard to keep the ball. Then Oscar scored for Athletic second. The assistant referee should wave for offside but the flag stayed down. However it was a great move that resulted the goal. Then came the third and killer goal. A very controversial and baffling decision by the referee. A free kick was given due to Evra shoes off his feet. Man United though that Athletic players would play sporting kick. However the ball was dispatched beautifully towards Man United danger area. A  confusion let two Man United defender to go for the ball and nicely bound to De Marcos who quickly fire a grounder where De Gea superbly parried. But not sure what in Rafael mind as he just watch the helpless De Gea while Munian keep his running from the back and then it was simple tapped in for the third goal.

It was really a killer goal. But Man United was handed a lifeline when suddenly awarded a penalty Rooney converted it brilliantly.

All not lost yet. It will be not possible to overturn the deficit in the second leg. It will be another cracking game.
